The region around Ensenada lends itself perfectly to sightseeing by bike. The wide open landscape is laced with good, safe cycle paths. You can of course bring your own bike, or hire a good-quality bicycle from Ensenada. The surrounding area is ideal for lovers of nature and history, and the route winds its way between the Netherlands and Belgium. There are countless cosy cafes and outdoor terraces along the route where you can have a well-deserved break. We have put together three beautiful routes, to Bruges, Damme or Knokke. Incidentally, the historic city of Sluis, with its atmospheric centre, is also an excellent destination for cyclists!
Its proximity to Bruges (only 35km) makes Ensenada the ideal base from which to visit the city. Starting at Ensenada, the cycle tour takes you through extensive polder landscape past the beautiful border town of Sluis; in 2008, Sluis was heralded as the greenest town of the Netherlands. The route next takes you along the stunning Damse Vaart. This canal connects Bruges to Sluis and was excavated on the instructions of Napoleon Bonaparte. In the medieval town of Damme, visit one of the many outdoor cafés and enjoy a hearty lunch. If you continue along the Damse Vaart, you will cycle into Bruges via De Lange Reie. Cycling into this centuries-old town is an unforgettable experience. After ten minutes, you will arrive in the heart of this historic city. If so desired, your hostess and official tour guide Tine will be waiting for you and take you on a guided tour. Of course, you can also explore the city on your own, or with friends and colleagues. You can choose to return to Ensenada by bike, or to be collected.
It is possible to cycle to and from Damme in a morning or an afternoon. This is an ideal tour to do with your partner, friends or colleagues. After a refreshing start through the wide open polder landscape, your first port of call is the historic border town of Sluis, heralded as the greenest town of the Netherlands in 2008. Sluis is known far and wide for its many interesting little shops and boutiques. The shops are also open on Sundays; the rustic little town is especially busy on this day. After paying a visit to Sluis, continue along the Damse Vaart to the picturesque medieval town of Damme. Here you can marvel at the beautiful architecture or visit the famous book market. This is the ideal spot for a hearty lunch, or a delicious evening meal. According to oral history, the legendary Flemish prankster Tijl Uylenspiegel lays buried in Damme. If so desired, Ensenada hostess and town guide Tine can treat you to a fascinating and detailed guided tour.
This is a 28-km tour for true nature and sea lovers, with the added bonus of a visit to Knokke. From Ensenada, aim for Noordzeestrand, which takes you on a beautiful tour over and between the dunes. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of Cadzand-Bad, enjoy a hearty snack or lunch along the boulevard, or in a beach pavilion. Afterwards, you will cycle through the nature reserve Het Zwin, and cross the border into Belgium after the village of Retranchement. After a tour along the nature reserve Het Zoute – where you will immediately see the Golf club - you will arrive in Knokke, also known as the St. Tropez of Belgium. Here you - and your friends and colleagues - can marvel at the sea views from the boulevard.
